Veronica Syman

Veronica Syman

President

Veronica is based in North Canterbury, and is the Head of Operations at Aranui Shipping Ltd which is part of Monson Group. 

 

Veronica has over 30 years of experience in the shipping industry in various roles and also serves on the WISTA NZ Committee. 

 

After several years on the Committee and being Vice-President she took over the President role in November 2021 being the first ever female President for Shipping New Zealand.

Sandie Ferguson

Secretary

Sandie is currently Managing Director of Ferguson Marine, which she has been operating since 2016.

Sandie has a background in Management, Finance and Administration and has skills across various industries in staff management, business strategy and logistical operations, also working with NZ Post, NYK Line and CP Ships.

Sandie is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors and has a qualification in Te Reo Level 2, along with many years of governance experience in both political and not-for-profit organisations.

Keith Thompson

In 1986 I started my career in Shipping through “Dalgety NZ Ltd”.

 

Soon after I joined the team at “Shipping Enterprises” and worked with the well known and respected Jim Burch who taught me some great principals and work ethics that have helped me to achieve well in our Industry.

 

In 2017 we opened our own Shipping Agency Business being “Thompson Port Agency” where we continue here today.

 

In 2008 I became a member of the Executive Committee for Shipping NZ, and during my tenure I have been involved with Training and Immigration, and have recently completed 2 years as President which also coincided with the turmoil of Covid.

 

I am very passionate for our Industry and continue to want to represent it well in this privileged position.

Nigel Smith

Committee Member

Nigel has been in the shipping industry for over 30 years and has worked for Customs, cargo interests and shipping lines.  Starting in Napier fresh out of school Nigel worked with NZ Customs before being promoted and transferring to Wellington. Nigel left Customs to take a commercial role with NZ Shipping Corporation in Wellington where he worked in the commercial and bookings team for several years.  Upon leaving Shipping Corp he took a break from Shipping and played music professionally for a few years before joining NZ Dairy board in their transport and shipping team.

 

Leaving NZ Dairy Board Nigel joined Wilhelmsen ( or Barwil as it was known then) in Wellington as a port agent where he also handled container agency work,  RORO bookings and sales and port agency for calls for Wellington, Napier, Nelson & Picton.  Moving to Auckland in 2005 he took on the commercial agency for RORO carrier Wallenius Wilhelmsen as well as the National responsibility for Wilhelmsens Port Agency functions. Additional roles have included sales and warehouse management for the Unitor Chemicals, refrigerant and gas business, development of the Pacific Islands port agency network and he is also a member of the Oceania management team for Wilhelmsen Port Services.

 

Outside of work Nigel is married with three adult children and has a passion for Italian motorcycles, aviation and craft beer.

Alistair Skingkley

Committee Member

Alistair is a Master Mariner with over 12 years of seagoing and 25+ years of shoreside experience.

 

Coming ashore in 1995 he has gained extensive operational and general management exposure in agency, port cost management, container liner management, technical ship management and geared multipurpose liner and tramp operations within USA, West Africa, Europe and the Asia Pacific.

 

For the last 10 years Alistair has worked for Swire Shipping in Singapore, PNG and most recently in New Zealand.

 

As Country Manager for Swire Shipping in New Zealand, he is a director of Swire Shipping NZ Ltd, Quadrant Pacific Limited and Cubic Transport Services and Independent Stevedoring Limited.

Nici Kennerley

Treasurer

Nici is the Finance Manager at Aranui Shipping Ltd. As well as accountancy, at Aranui Nici assists in documentation and operations including Husbandry services. 

 

She has worked in shipping since 2014 and has experience in Not-For-Profit , Horticulture, Kiwifruit Post Harvest Facilities, and service industries, she is a Chartered Accountant, based in Tauranga.

 

Nici joined the committee as Treasurer in November 2020 and looks forward to continuing to contribute her skills to NZ Shipping industry.

Alister Wishart

ICLC Representative

Alister Wishart has worked in the shipping industry since 1980 including locations in Wellington, Auckland, Australia, Scandinavia and Europe.

 

Since 1996 has Alister has worked for Oceanbridge Shipping firstly  as General Manager – Commercial and Operations then for the past 25 years as Chief Operations Officer and Company Director.

 

Oceanbridge Shipping provides a wide range of cargo services across offices throughout New Zealand and Australia.

 

Alister has been on the Executive Team for Shipping New Zealand for the past 15 years and has a wide range of experience and skills to offer back to the New Zealand shipping industry.

Chris Lee

Committee Member

Chris is based in Napier with Olsen Shipping, providing Agency services at Napier Port.

Chris has also worked at various other Ports around NZ during his time as an Agent, servicing a wide range of vessels.

 

Alongside agency work, Chris also acts as a Customs Broker for Olsen Shipping.

 

Chris joined the Committee in November 2021 & looks forward to continuing to assist the NZ Shipping committee & wider members in our industry.
